You are here: Home how to... OpenVPN

This HOWTO briefly outlines setting up OpenVPN as a private network for home. I use it to connect to my internal network from outside my home as well as from the wireless network at home.

It assumes that readers possess a prior understanding of basic networking concepts such as IP addresses, DNS names, IP routing, network interfaces, gateways, and firewall rules. It also assumes some administrative knowledge of FreeBSD and Debian Linux systems.

I use a FreeBSD box as my home gateway so the server part covers a FreeBSD install. My laptop runs Kubuntu Linux so the client HOWTO refers to that.

The overall assumptions are that my internal home network resides on the subnet and that the OpenVPN on the subnet. All the necessary routing is covered in the HOWTOs.

I started with the server part.
